Description

Cretaceous Burmite Roach in Kachin Myanmar Amber.

This ancient organism has several prominent features such as its Long Antennae which is segmented. It comprises a broad scape, narrow pedicel, and multiple flagellomeres –indicating high reliance on chemosensory input required to live in the Hukawng Valley, 99-100 million years ago.

This roach’s hairy legs–otherwise known as dense setae–is important trait. These hair structures may have served dual function for the ancient roach: by providing enhanced tactile sensitivity, allowing him to sense vibrations or changes in the ground nearby. This is important in low light situations, or in cluttered environments of the hukawng forest and ecosystem.
