Description

Extremely rare unstudied reptilian cluster inside Kachin Myanmar Cretaceous amber from the Hukawng Valley.

The inclusion(s) is very big: it measure more 30mm long! This piece of Amber is exceptionally rare.

Cenomanian tree sap once covered a possible family of reptiles as they struggled and clustered to one another. As the resin is sticky and viscous, terrestrial creatures trapped inside often struggle & attempt to free oneselves from the deluge of resin around them. These nested creatures may have become entangled as the amber moved into their habitat from gravity or other environmental factors.

Over time the resin flows over and covers the trapped reptiles. The chemical composition as well as the rapid burial process may not have transpired fast enough before a portion of decomposition took place, evidenced by bubble-like inclusions of paleogas erupting from the trunk of the creature’s torsos, seen in the inclusion.

This preservation process can keep intricate details intact, including their skin, internal organs, and soft tissues. The phenomenon of paleogas inclusions found within fossilized reptilian amber is a result of complex geological and biological processes. The presence of gases within the reptile’s body as it becomes trapped in amber can be attributed to decomposition and gas formation. When an organism dies, its body starts to undergo decomposition. During this process, microorganisms break down organic matter, releasing gases like methane and carbon dioxide. These gases are byproducts of the decomposition process. Because of the resin entrapment, these gases are preserved alongside the amber and the reptile family also. Thankfully due to the entombement process, the airtight seal formed by the hardening resin reduces the availability of oxygen within the amber, limiting the further decomposition of the reptile’s bodies, bone, and any remaining gases.
