Description
Scorpion (Scorpiones indet.) in Burmese amber (Burmite), Hukawng Valley, Kachin State, Myanmar; Cenomanian, mid-Cretaceous (~99 Ma).
Material and preservation: Clear honey-amber, double-polished lenticular cabochon. The inclusion comprises a partial arachnid preserving the posterior mesosoma and an elongate metasoma with telson in lateral to slightly oblique aspect. Sclerites are carbonized and sharply contrasted; fine plant detritus and microbubbles are dispersed through the matrix. No modern fillers observed.
Morphological notes: Mesosomal tergites form a compact, dark sclerite mass at the tail base; outlines of at least two tergites are discernible. Metasoma slender, with five serially elongate segments bearing low carinae; segment V longest. Telson vesicle moderately swollen with an acicular, gently recurved aculeus intact. A gracile appendage element (probable pedipalp or leg femur/patella) projects anteroventrally from the prosomal/mesosomal complex. Trichobothria and pectinal dentition are beyond optical resolution; therefore assignment is restricted to Scorpiones, with overall proportions consistent with a buthoid lineage common to Kachin amber.
Taphonomy: Articulation of metasomal segments and absence of decay halos indicate rapid entombment. Orientation and sweep of the tail suggest the animal was trapped while advancing across a resin flow; slight compaction at the body mass reflects resin viscosity rather than post-mortem disarticulation.
Dimensions: 30 × 20 × 5.9 mm.
Weight: 10.975 carats.
Remarks: Scorpion inclusions are scarce in Burmite; specimens preserving both metasoma and torso are particularly desirable. Displays strongly under transmitted light, with the arched tail and intact sting providing a textbook Cretaceous scorpion silhouette for collection or study.
