Description

Very large feather from Cretaceous flying animal inside Kachin amber inclusion. This piece of amber is very rare to see because of the size of the feathers and immaculate detail.

Inside this piece you see very obvious ‘vaned’ feathers, which is for the flying birds and birdlike fauna. These you can see have easy to identify central rachi which make it look flat. Evaluation of symmetry also important for the discovery of Myanmar ambers with feather, which is rare. All these feature we compare with other evolutionary evidence in our histories. Since feather research in amber is in infancy stages it is important to note that this is one of the largest we have come across. This piece of amber is from the mid-late Cretaceous period from all other ambers mined in the Hukawng Valley in Northern Myanmar. Feather inclusion(s) often must be polished very thin in order to properly see inside the amber. This has led to a small fissure to be glued to the amber but it does not distrupt from the completeness of the piece because it is only the surface and the integrity of the amber is restored.

Feathers are complex structures that have evolved over millions of years.
